Can You Add Snow Guards to an Existing Metal Roof in Colorado?

A metal roof can shed snow quickly. That is useful until a large section releases over a doorway, deck, walkway, driveway, or gutter. If your roof is already installed, you may still have options.
Many existing metal roofs can be fitted with snow retention, but the system needs to match the roof profile and expected snow conditions.
Start with the roof you have
The attachment method for standing seam metal is not always the same as for exposed fastener panels. Before recommending a system, a contractor should evaluate the panel profile, seam condition, fasteners, slope, roof length, and places where sliding snow could cause damage.
An older roof with loose panels or deteriorated fasteners may need repairs before adding new snow retention.
Where does snow retention matter most?
- Main entrances and frequently used walkways
- Decks, patios, and driveways
- Gutters, lower roof sections, and landscaping
- Areas above utilities, parked vehicles, or equipment
Why placement matters
A few snow guards above one doorway may not be enough. The system should account for the full roof area that contributes snow to that location. Design and spacing depend on expected loads and the roof assembly.
AMC installs S-5! ColorGard snow retention systems for compatible metal roofing applications.
For product-specific guidance, the manufacturer publishes S-5! snow retention resources.
What about ice, gutters, and drainage?
Snow guards are intended to control snow movement, not cure ice dams. Snow that stays on the roof will eventually melt.
Valleys, gutters, downspouts, and, where appropriate, heat cable still need to manage runoff.
If you are deciding whether snow retention makes sense in the first place, read AMC's homeowner guide to snow guards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can snow guards be installed without drilling through a standing seam roof?
Compatible clamp-on systems may attach to certain standing seam profiles without penetrating the panel. A qualified installer should confirm system compatibility.
Do snow guards stop all snow from falling?
No. They help control snow movement. Meltwater, small amounts of snow, and ice can still move off the roof.
